Taking Care of Your Accident and Other Damages
Motor insurance is one of the most basic but compulsory insurance policies in Ghana. The Motor Traffic ACT 1958 gives the Legal basis for this policy. Motor insurance can be grouped into three main categories;
- Third Party: This policy only covers user of the vehicle in respect of death, bodily injury or property damage sustained by third parties due to negligent use of the insured motor vehicle. The standard limit under the policy is GH¢5,000 but a higher limit can be bought for a higher compensation and upon request.
- Third Party Fire and Theft: This policy covers accidental damage to the insured’s vehicle caused as a result of theft or attempted theft and fire. It also covers bodily injury to third parties through the use of the vehicle.
- Comprehensive: This policy is on basis of all risk covers subject to exclusions. It covers accidental and malicious damage to the insured’s car, theft, towing of accident car. It also covers emergency medical attention and death or injuries to occupants of the vehicle at the time of accident. It also covers liabilities to third parties or other road users. The standard limit per policy is GH¢5,000.
However due to the high cost of vehicle repairs or cost of spare parts, policyholders are prepared to increase the limit over the minimum of GH¢5,000 and above depending on the expected possible scale of damage of the vehicle involved in the insurance.
